End of Year Survey 2015

Hey Fencers! You may have gotten this via email or saw this on Facebook:

It’s hard to believe that we’ve completed another season. Thank you for another great year of fencing at Harrison! It’s always a fun challenge for me as a coach, and I hope that you found the lessons and practice sessions fun and challenging as well. I’ve enjoyed working with all of the fencers at Harrison, and I’m already looking forward to next year.

To help me plan for the new season, I could use your help. Starting with the last season, Harrison fencers complete a survey that asks questions about the program and how everything worked out for each of you. I need you to complete the survey (online) for this year’s results. Your feedback is very important! It gives me the information needed to make any changes or improvements needed, and it helps me to inform the Harrison administration (Mr. Remaly, Mr. Galema, Mr. Burkle, etc.) how we’re doing and to plead our case for the next year.

To complete the survey, please go to:  http://goo.gl/forms/6oOycokaZm

The survey is anonymous so you can be as candid as you like. I encourage you to share any comments or concerns you may have. And if you have something to share about what you liked, please do so! As always, if you have any questions on anything, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks again, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,
Coach Schafer

Fundraising Campaign 2015 – Ghirardelli Chocolates

As we discussed in practice recently, our first official fundraising activity for the season will be to sell Ghirardelli Chocolates. (This will be the first of a few activities that we will doing to raise money for the club.) If you’re not familiar with Ghirardelli, they are one of very few American manufacturers that make chocolate from the cocoa bean through to finish products. They sell a number of chocolate products, from squares and bars to hot cocoa and baking products. I’ve received the order forms and posters for the campaign, and I will hand these out to you at our next practice on Tuesday, November 18. We have a group goal and individual goals for this campaign, all of which we will discuss at our next practice session.

Remember, all of our fundraising efforts are for hosting our own fencing tournament in the spring. We have some work to do, but getting a head start on all of this will help us to reach our goal.

If you want a look at our fundraising brochures, you can download a copy of one of them from this link: Ghirardelli Holiday Brochure. And if you’re feeling really ambitious, you can line up some sales before you pick up your official brochure this week.

Officer Elections 2014-15

ELX-election-ballot

It’s the start of a new season, so we have a new crew of officers to lead us. Congratulations! Your new officers are:

President – Heather Bucher

Vice President – Abby Miskin

Treasurer – Luis Meza

Secretary – Drew Johnson

Public Relations Officer – Jacob Ashman

We’re off to a good start! So the first decision we’ll need to make as a club and team is when to do our fundraising activities. Bring some ideas to practice on Tuesday.

Curious about fencing? Check it out!

In case you haven’t heard yet, our callouts are scheduled for tomorrow at 9:06 am and at 3:00 pm. This will be a great opportunity for newbies to check out the fencing club and to learn about what we have in store for the upcoming season. No previous experience is required–only a willingness to learn and a sense of adventure! Returning members should be prepared to practice on Tuesday. (That’s a big hint–bring your equipment.) And, as an added incentive, the first 30 students that turn in their completed registration forms will receive a $10 gift card to our swag shop.

For parents and interested family members, we will also have a couple of parent information meetings to answer all the questions that they may have. If you can’t make it to either of the callout sessions, come to one of the following meetings to learn about fencing and answer all of your parents’ questions at the same time:

Parent Information Meeting 1 – Friday, October 10 at 6:30 pm @ Harrison HS B101BC
Parent Information Meeting 2 – Saturday, October 11 at 11:00 am @ Tippecanoe County Library, Klondike Branch, Tempest Room (3062 Lindberg Road, West Lafayette,  765-463-5893)

I strongly encourage you to attend, even if you’re just a little bit curious about fencing. And you do not need to come to both meetings. We’ll have some light refreshments, and anyone who is interested can come. (Bring your friends, parents and family, but no pets, please!). I’ll go over what the club is all about, what you’ll learn, everything about equipment, and more!

I hope to see you all there!

2014-15 Registration Forms Available Now

In preparation for the start of our new season, our new registration forms are now ready for download. You can save a copy and print out the forms. The registration packet is beefier than it was last year. So don’t be intimidated by the paperwork. Some of the pages are informational and don’t need to be turned in for registration. The rule of thumb to follow is if it requires a signature, it probably needs to be turned in to Coach. Additionally, the HHSFC Handbook has been updated and can be downloaded as well. It should answer most (if not all) of your questions about the fencing club, and even some about fencing in general.

So if you would like to get a head start on the season, fill out the forms and turn them in to Coach Schafer on the callout day. If you and/or your parents should have any questions or if you have difficulty downloading the forms, please use the Contact form on this site to send an email to Coach.

To download the forms, go to the Forms page listed under Links & Resources.

Sneak Peek: Raider Rally Flyer

I’ve been working on the plans for the upcoming school year since the start of club fencing at Harrison High School is only a couple of months away (give or take a few weeks). Harrison hosts the Raider Rally, which is a day-long orientation for incoming freshman students. This will be the first year that we will be including a flyer in the information packet that will be handed out at the Rally. Since almost half of the team at Harrison graduated, it’s time to replenish with some new students.

Here’s a look at the flyer for the Raider Rally:

End of Year BBQ

main-bbq-party-ideas

For our end of year awards banquet, I will be hosting a potluck barbeque. Invitations have been sent to the email addresses you have provided to me. We will be handing out certificates and awards to end off our year. (Officers: this is a big hint about completing the project I gave you a few weeks ago!) If you have not received an invitation in your inbox, it is most likely because I do not have your email address. But not to worry! I am including the link to the invitation here:

http://www.eventeve.com/26308/harrison-fencing-club-awards-bbq

Please use discretion when sharing this information since it does include my address. Please RSVP as soon as you can. Also please note we could use some tables and chairs. I’ll have some grilled food to get us started. If you have a family favorite or an ethnic dish to share, please bring it! For anyone with any food intolerances or preferences (vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.), just let us know.

I look forward to seeing you there!

End of Year Survey – How Did We Do?

Survey-2316704This was our second year at Harrison with a fencing club, and personally, I feel things went very well. It was good to see new faces as well as fencers returning from the previous year. And I’m always pleased to see how quickly you have all grasped the fundamentals of our sport.

To prepare for next year, I need your help. By getting your feedback on being part of the fencing club, we can make adjustments for next year. Your input is critical, so please click the link below and complete the survey. I encourage you to give your honest opinion–your survey will remain anonymous. And if you have anything that you want to get off your chest or share that is not covered by the questions, you can do so at the end of the survey.

So, please fill out the survey (see link below). As always, if you have any questions, just let me know!

Practice Cancelled

DoorknobAs I posted in our Facebook group, practice is cancelled for today. It looks like the snow will hit our area just as we would be starting practice and accumulating quickly. The latest prediction is for 8-10 inches of snow. Stay safe and practice your disengages at home. Back in my day, my coach gave me the homework of practicing my disengages around a doorknob. Just don’t damage your doors at home!

See everyone on Thursday!

Holiday Party

Holiday-PartyYes, it’s that time of year again! We will have our second annual HHS Fencing Club Holiday Party, and this time family and friends are invited to join in the festivities. If you haven’t received your invitation by email, please let me know. This year’s party will be a potluck dinner, so crack open those cookbooks and recipe boxes.

For all the event details and potluck sign-up, go to http://www.eventeve.com/25532/harrison-fencing-club-holiday-potluck.

Please RSVP soon so that we will have a good idea of how many people and how much food will be at the party. If you are bringing friends or additional family members, please let me know.

I hope to see all of you there!
