HHSFC Store is Open

hd_estoreHey HHSFC Fencers and Fencing Families! Some of you have asked if you can pay your membership fees online, and at the time we didn’t have anything set up to take credit card payments. However, that has changed!

I’m happy to announce that our store is now open! You can pay for your membership fees and for a couple of other items by using our online store associated with our Teamapp site. At the moment, we have the club t-shirt and the team uniform patch for sale there. We may be adding a few more items depending on interest, so keep checking back to see if we have anything new for you. If you would like to see something added to the store (equipment? uniforms? team jackets?) please let me know as soon as you can.

To view the store, go to: https://www.teamapp.com/clubs/5364/store. The site may require you to login or sign up if you’re not already registered. For students, if you have already turned in a completed registration form, use the email address that you listed on your form.

Any questions, just let me know!

End of Year Survey 2015

Hey Fencers! You may have gotten this via email or saw this on Facebook:

It’s hard to believe that we’ve completed another season. Thank you for another great year of fencing at Harrison! It’s always a fun challenge for me as a coach, and I hope that you found the lessons and practice sessions fun and challenging as well. I’ve enjoyed working with all of the fencers at Harrison, and I’m already looking forward to next year.

To help me plan for the new season, I could use your help. Starting with the last season, Harrison fencers complete a survey that asks questions about the program and how everything worked out for each of you. I need you to complete the survey (online) for this year’s results. Your feedback is very important! It gives me the information needed to make any changes or improvements needed, and it helps me to inform the Harrison administration (Mr. Remaly, Mr. Galema, Mr. Burkle, etc.) how we’re doing and to plead our case for the next year.

To complete the survey, please go to:  http://goo.gl/forms/6oOycokaZm

The survey is anonymous so you can be as candid as you like. I encourage you to share any comments or concerns you may have. And if you have something to share about what you liked, please do so! As always, if you have any questions on anything, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks again, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,
Coach Schafer

Officer Elections 2014-15

ELX-election-ballot

It’s the start of a new season, so we have a new crew of officers to lead us. Congratulations! Your new officers are:

President – Heather Bucher

Vice President – Abby Miskin

Treasurer – Luis Meza

Secretary – Drew Johnson

Public Relations Officer – Jacob Ashman

We’re off to a good start! So the first decision we’ll need to make as a club and team is when to do our fundraising activities. Bring some ideas to practice on Tuesday.

Curious about fencing? Check it out!

In case you haven’t heard yet, our callouts are scheduled for tomorrow at 9:06 am and at 3:00 pm. This will be a great opportunity for newbies to check out the fencing club and to learn about what we have in store for the upcoming season. No previous experience is required–only a willingness to learn and a sense of adventure! Returning members should be prepared to practice on Tuesday. (That’s a big hint–bring your equipment.) And, as an added incentive, the first 30 students that turn in their completed registration forms will receive a $10 gift card to our swag shop.

For parents and interested family members, we will also have a couple of parent information meetings to answer all the questions that they may have. If you can’t make it to either of the callout sessions, come to one of the following meetings to learn about fencing and answer all of your parents’ questions at the same time:

Parent Information Meeting 1 – Friday, October 10 at 6:30 pm @ Harrison HS B101BC
Parent Information Meeting 2 – Saturday, October 11 at 11:00 am @ Tippecanoe County Library, Klondike Branch, Tempest Room (3062 Lindberg Road, West Lafayette,  765-463-5893)

I strongly encourage you to attend, even if you’re just a little bit curious about fencing. And you do not need to come to both meetings. We’ll have some light refreshments, and anyone who is interested can come. (Bring your friends, parents and family, but no pets, please!). I’ll go over what the club is all about, what you’ll learn, everything about equipment, and more!

I hope to see you all there!

2014-15 Registration Forms Available Now

In preparation for the start of our new season, our new registration forms are now ready for download. You can save a copy and print out the forms. The registration packet is beefier than it was last year. So don’t be intimidated by the paperwork. Some of the pages are informational and don’t need to be turned in for registration. The rule of thumb to follow is if it requires a signature, it probably needs to be turned in to Coach. Additionally, the HHSFC Handbook has been updated and can be downloaded as well. It should answer most (if not all) of your questions about the fencing club, and even some about fencing in general.

So if you would like to get a head start on the season, fill out the forms and turn them in to Coach Schafer on the callout day. If you and/or your parents should have any questions or if you have difficulty downloading the forms, please use the Contact form on this site to send an email to Coach.

To download the forms, go to the Forms page listed under Links & Resources.

New Officers for 2013-2014

gavelCongratulations to our newly elected club officers:

President – Jacob Banes
Vice President – David Tishmack
Treasurer – Sam Schmalzried
Secretary – Sarah Motley

Well done, everyone, on getting this done! As I mentioned before, at the end of the season we will hold officer elections for the next year. I’m looking forward to getting more organized as a club and more defined as a team. We’re taking some good first steps!

HHS Fencing Club Officer Elections

volunteersAs we discussed at our last practice, we will be having our officer elections on Thursday, November 7. Normally we would have had these elections at the end of the season to get ourselves set up for the next year, but we missed our elections last year. To compensate, we will elect our new officers now and then have another election (for the 2014-2015 school year) in March to close out the current season.

To address some of your questions about what each officer does and their roles in the club, I’ve included here some excerpts from the proposed bylaws that you can also download from this site:

Section 1.  President-  The President should have at least two (2) years competitive experience in the sport of fencing. He/she must be a Competitive Member of the Harrison High School Fencing Club.  The president must have a love of cheesecake.  His/her duties include:

a)    Organizing and attending meetings with the Vice President and Treasurer.

b)    Organizing and attending meetings with the body of Official Members.

c)    Appointing coaches.

d)    Organizing tournaments and social activities.

e)    The President must love cheesecake

Section 2.  Vice President-  The Vice President should have at least one (1) year of competitive fencing experience and be a Competitive Member of the Harrison High School Fencing Club.  His/her duties include:

a)    Assisting the President in running meetings.

b)    Keeping records of individual member’s status.

c)    Assuming duties of President if the President is unable to perform his/her said duties.

Section 3.  Treasurer-  The Treasurer must be a Competitive Member of the Harrison High School Fencing Club.  His/her duties include:

a)    Keeping records of all finances and appropriations.

b)    Informing Executive Members in regards to the club budget and any purchases made since last meeting.

c)    Attending Club Sports Council meetings if President or Vice President cannot attend.

Section 4.  Duties of all Executive Officers

a)    Writing budgets for the following semester.

b)    Selecting new acquisitions.  This includes equipment, membership in the United States Fencing Association (USFA), cheesecake and other refreshments at tournaments.

c)    Writing proposals for Capital Fund purchases.

d)    Promoting expansion and growth of the Harrison High School Fencing Club.

e)    Appointing new Executive Officers (see Article IV, Section 1).

The proposed bylaws or constitution for the club are merely a suggestion. If you feel that there are elements of the bylaws that should be changed in some way, feel free to discuss this with your officers and club members. And if you are wondering, these bylaws are used by a collegiate fencing club in Wisconsin.

The following are the nominees for each officer position listed –

President: Jacob Banes, Luis Meza, Sarah Motley, David Tishmack

Vice President: Luis Meza, Nathaniel North, Alex Siler, David Tishmack

Treasurer: Jacob Ginn, Alex Mohler, Sam Schmalzried

Secretary: Jacob Ginn, Rebecca Herget, Sarah Motley, Nathaniel North

The nominees will give a one-minute presentation on why you should vote for him or her. Once the presentations are concluded, the group will then vote for officers. Please keep in mind that as your coach I have expectations from each of the officers. This will not be a cake-walk or easy ride. You will be expected to perform the duties of your office and perform them well.
